June 1st is the 51st Anniversary of the National Trails Day Systems Act. Come celebrate it by volunteering your time on MAX PATCH, one of the iconic jewels of the Appalachian Trail, and a highlight of all trails in Western North Carolina.
The Carolina Mountain Club Trail Maintenance Crew members, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the Pisgah National Forest Appalachian Ranger District, REI, and Farm to Feet are partnering to offer a unique opportunity to spend the day assisting in the rehabilitation of the AT as it traverses Max Patch Bald in the Pisgah National Forest.
Individuals and families are welcome to sign up (on a first come basis) and be partnered with veteran Trail Maintainers to spend the day having a hands on experience working to rehabilitate the trail in a sustainable condition for generations to come. No experience necessary! You will be matched with a skilled maintainer according to your interests and abilities. You will spend the day on top of one of the most beautiful views-sheds in western North Carolina, while working on the fabled A.T.
Please wear long pants, sturdy boots, pack a lunch, bring plenty of water, and bring safety glasses if you have them. Sunscreen, bug spray, and a rain jacket are strongly suggested. CMC will provide a hard hat, safety instructions, supervision, training, and tools for the tasks you are assigned.
The meeting place is at Home Depot, Asheville, off of Exit 44 at 8:15 a.m. (127 Acton Circle, Asheville, NC) Please look for the REI tent, where you will check in and sign a work waiver. All minors must be accompanied by an adult who will sign a waiver for them. REI will provide us with a mid-morning snack for when we take a break. We will set up carpools and travel to the work site. (This is approximately a one hour drive time). After safety instructions, and work demonstrations, you will work in a small group with a skilled instructor. Plan on a rewarding and satisfying volunteer experience!
We will pack up our tools and return to Asheville around 1:30 p.m. Join us after 3:00 p.m. at Sierra Nevada Brewing at the Lower Park (100 Sierra Nevada Way, Fletcher, NC) to celebrate and receive a pair of MAX PATCH hiking sox manufactured by Farm to Feet (compliments of Farm to Feet and REI) After a grand day on the bald, we will have plenty to reminisce with the new found friends we have made out on the trail.
