Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Northern Resource Management Coordinator based in Boiling Springs, PA and working closely with New England regional staff and the local A.T. Maintaining Clubs, the New England Natural Resource Technician (NENRT) is responsible for invasive exotic plant monitoring and management throughout the region, assisting local clubs with the rare plant monitoring program, implementing an open area condition assessment in southern New England, and assisting with other conservation initiatives as needed. The NENRT will be required to maintain detailed work records, GIS based monitoring and management data, and field equipment. The NENRT will work cooperatively with Trail maintaining clubs, agency partners, local schools and universities, and other collaborators within the New England region to implement resource management projects. 

Fieldwork will occur along Appalachian Trail lands throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, and may occasionally occur in parts of New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Assists with the administration of ATC’s invasive/exotic (IE) species monitoring and management program in the New England region. The NENRT will conduct invasive species inventories focused along the A.T. in Vermont and New Hampshire, using established protocols. The NENRT supports volunteer recruitment and training, and maintains program records including inventory data, monitoring data and volunteer numbers. The NENRT will work closely with ATC staff and partners to host volunteer workdays for controlling IE species in the A.T. Corridor.  The NENRT will also work with contracted herbicide teams to treat invasive areas. 

Supports ATC’s rare plant monitoring in the New England region.  The NENRT will work closely with ATC and ANST staff to help provide volunteer guidance and training for monitoring rare plant sites. The NENRT will assist with communication between key agency partners such as State Natural Heritage employees, university botanists, and A.T. clubs to assure program effectiveness.  The NENRT will also communicate with Trail maintaining clubs to ensure awareness and protection of rare plants is exercised while conducting regular A.T. maintenance.

Assists with the implementation of the A.T. Seasons phenology monitoring program. The NENRT will coordinate with A.T. Clubs, local schools, universities, organizations, agency partners and associated volunteers to host phenology workshops and to establish phenology monitoring sites along the A.T.  The NENRT maintains program records including phonological data, site details and volunteer information.

Maintains detailed field and administrative work records and field files.

Coordinates with ATC staff to schedule and complete field projects; including logistics coordination, pre-field preparation, and post-field follow-up and reporting.

Maintains regular communication with ATC staff and Trail clubs and assists Trail Clubs and supervisor with volunteer crew training and management.

Travels to and from work sites, and may be required to periodically tent/camp at work sites.

Organizes, inventories, and maintains tools, supplies, and other field equipment.

Holds a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, botany, ecology, or related field. Working towards a master’s degree is a plus.

Confidence with the identification of native New England plants and exotic/invasive plant species.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to organize, track, and follow projects through to successful completion and report the details of programs.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a field and office setting.

Ability to work effectively without direct supervision, and make decisions based on best judgment.

Ability to inspire cooperation and effective communication among individuals, private groups, local, state and federal agencies.

Self-starter who can take on and manage multiple tasks.

Fluency in Microsoft Office suite and e-mail software is essential.

Experience with GPS technology and GIS software is preferred.

Wilderness First Aid strongly encouraged.

Familiarity with the Appalachian Trail and hiking experience is a plus.

Proven ability to travel on foot over rough terrain and for extended periods of time/distance.

Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including some weekends.

Physical Demands:

Requires work in a field environment as well as in an office setting using computers and office equipment.

Requires valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.

Reliable form of transportation required, work-related travel with a personal vehicle will be reimbursed.

Requires the ability to work under adverse weather conditions. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions and seasonal exposure to extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and sunlight.

Incumbent may handle heavy brush, walk for extended periods on and off trail , stand for long periods, perform routine moderate lifting, and can carry up to 30 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of five miles, traverse rough uneven terrain, and wet and slippery surfaces.  

Must be able to use outdoor equipment such as brush cutters, loppers, weed wrench and shovels.
